Helen Caroline Scott

Was born October 28, 1906 and passed away on Sept. 25 2000.

Helen Caroline Scott died at midnight, Sept. 25 2000, 33 days short of her 94th birthday.

She was born Helen Caroline Lawrence in Detroit, Mich., and grew up in the Grosse Pointe Shores. After graduation from high school, she attended the University of Michigan. During her sophomore year, Helen entered a beauty contest in which the top prize was a trip to Hollywood and an audition with a film studio. Helen won the contest and moved to Hollywood in 1926. It didn’t take long for her to realize that the type of life the Hollywood crowd led was not for her.

Helen married and gave birth to her first child in 1928. Shortly thereafter Helen and her family moved to Santa Barbara, where, in 1931 her second child was born. The depression years were difficult but the family remained intact living on a cattle ranch (Dos Pueblos) just north of Santa Barbara. During World War II, a Japanese submarine surfaced just offshore from the Naples oil field and fired several rounds into the area adjoining the ranch. It was quite an exciting time for Helen and her family.

In 1942, the family moved to Santa Barbara, at which time her husband Earl Scott, served as a fireman with the newly constructed Marine Corp Air Station at Goleta. (Which was later to be the site of the University of California at Santa Barbara). After the war was over, her husband helped form the fire department for the University of California’s new campus at Goleta, which was built on the USMC air station site.

Helen and her family remained in Santa Barbara until her husband’s retirement, when they traveled extensively, finally settling down in Santa Paula, Calif. In 1994, Helen moved with her ailing husband to St George, Utah, to be near to her son Larry.

Helen had many talents, including oil painting, crocheting and knitting but her favorite thing was her garden, which probably came from her father Bert Lawrence who was the superintendent of the grounds for the Kirk B Johnson Estate in Montecito.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents May and Bert Lawrence of Santa Barbara, her husband Earl Scott “Scotty” in April 24, 1996, and her eldest son Patrick Scott in February 14, 1998.

Surviving her passing is her youngest son Lawrence Scott of St George Utah, granddaughter Pamela Scott of Summerland, grandsons Michael Scott of Capetown, South Africa, Matthew Arnold of Houston Texas and Christopher Scott of Santa Barbara, and numerous great-grandchildren. Helen’s son and daughter-in-law Dana were with her as she passed peacefully from this world to be in God’s care.
